A very rare sighting - an unrestored green 300SL

A vehicle like no other, a dream for everyone. But unfortunately, they are quite rare. The Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing.

The nickname "Gullwing" comes from the upward-opening doors that resemble the wings of a seagull. This distinctive feature defines the 300SL.

Originally stemming from motorsport, the 300SL Gullwing was later adapted for street use to meet market demands.
The 300SL was the first production car with direct fuel injection, enhancing the engine's performance and efficiency. With an impressive top speed of around 260 km/h, the 300SL was one of the fastest production sports cars in the world at its introduction. To maximize performance and minimize weight, the 300SL Gullwing utilized an aluminum body and a lightweight tubular frame, resulting in significant weight savings. Following the success of the Gullwing model, the 300SL Roadster was introduced, offering an open driving experience with conventional doors.

The 300SL Gullwing was produced in limited numbers. Between 1954 and 1957, approximately 1,400 units were manufactured, contributing to its rarity. The design of the 300SL Gullwing was crafted by German engineer Béla Barényi. Its clean lines and distinctive gull-wing door design have turned it into a timeless classic. Due to its rarity, revolutionary design, and historical significance as one of the first high-performance road vehicles, well-preserved examples of the 300SL Gullwing are highly sought-after collector's items today, commanding high prices in the classic car market. By the way, this particular specimen was spotted on a German autobahn. It seems to remain in its original state, untouched by any restoration. Particularly noteworthy is its paintwork, as green 300 SL models are extremely scarce.
